Small Business Internet and Connectivity

Introduction

In this example we look at how Internexus can assess the requirements of a small business and provide suitable products to improve performance, increase resilience, and reduce costs. Internexus Broadband and Connectivity products can be tailored for the needs of any size or type of business.

Small Business Set up

Small businesses up to 20 staff can be found in many different industries and are set-up in a wide variety of ways. These can be very small businesses requiring only basic Internet Access to small businesses that have requirements for high speed Internet and connectivity. Almost all will have offices type of functions such as email, even though some of the smaller ones may just be 'one man' businesses.

Common Business Needs

Businesses will vary greatly in their Internet and Connectivity requirements. These days email and Internet Access is essential for any business. Here are some of the common needs of most small businesses.

  • Email communications - an essential need for every business
  • General Access to the Internet for a wide range of purposes
  • IP Telephony (VoIP), either because the business has a full IP telephone system or is simply has a requirement for a SIP Trunk
  • Access to hosted application
  • Access to company applications by Staff working off-site

Some larger small businesses will have additional needs such as:-

  • Own Server, Hosting and Websites
  • Data communication between offices
  • Provide a common security for staff at multiple sites or offices e.g. using IP VPN
  • Data backup to remote sites/co-location

3 Step Process

  • Assessment

Our staff will do an assessment by looking at the existing business set-up, current needs, future plans, and business priorities. This will help determine the best product or combination of products for the business. With a small business, this will normally be done over the telephone but in some cases where requirements are more complex a site visit and face to face discussions will be necessary after an initial telephone assessment.

  • Recommendations

Following the assessment, we will provide a written recommendation with a quotation. Our aims would be to delivers better performance and more resilience whilst fulfilling other identified needs. The options and recommendations will be discussed with the business before agreement is reached on the best way forward.

  • Installation & Provisioning

Once the products are agreed, Internexus can undertake the installation and commissioning to ensure that the product is configured and operating effectively. The agreed products will be installed and services provisioned in a seamless manner with minimal or no disruption to the business. Internexus will provide ongoing support and advice as needed.

Products to Meet Needs

In many cases with small businesses with modest requirements, standard Business Broadband (ADSL) or Fibre broadband would be adequate and Dedicated Internet Access may not be necessary. However, if requirements are higher, ADSL broadband may not be adequate, especially at peak times. Even with the best standard ADSL there could be up to 20 users sharing the same bandwidth at peak times, as it is a contended service.

In some cases there may be a requirement for high upstream bandwidth especially if the company has IP Telephony with many concurrent users, or runs its own server based applications. In such a case having ADSL may be inadequate due to the low upload speeds, unless Fibre Broadband with "up to 10Mb" upload speeds was available from the local exchange. Other options may be SDSL or Ethernet First Mile.

Overall Connection Bandwidth will be determined by the needs of the business and for larger small businesses a Dedicated Connection such as a Leased Line or Wireless Microwave Link to a Internexus POP may be worth considering especially if the bandwidth needs were predicted to grow in the future.

A business may also consider utilizing Internexus SIP Trunking services, especially if the new bandwidth is ample as this will enable the business to reduce line rental costs and also make savings on telephone calls. Internexus SIP Trunking is usually possible without replacing the current Telephone System.

Alternatively a new IP Telephone System (in conjunction with our partner Tpad) may be worth considering. This will provide the latest advanced features such as Call Recording, Fax to Email and Remote Working. Tpad are offering a FREE 'next generation' IP telephone system (worth up to £7,000) for small businesses that are willing to become a Tpad Reference site!

Business Quotes

"When I set up my business, I needed Internet Access for the normal business needs but was not sure about what sort of service was needed. Internexus staff looked at what I needed to do and recommended their low cost Internexus Business Broadband. I am generally happy with the service even though I have noticed it is slower after 4pm. Internexus have proposed upgrades when I need them but at present I am very content with what I have."
Jane Dickson - Owner Fitness Today

"I needed business broadband and business phone line for my office at the back of the shop (opticians), I have used Internexus broadband at home for many years and contacted the business sales team who were very helpful. They asked some questions and explained the best products that would deliver what I needed, at a competitive price. I was pleased with the service and although it took some time for the installation to be completed, they kept me informed of the progress. I am satisfied with the service."
Tom Hargreaves - ClearView Opticians

"I currently have Internexus Business Broadband and Internexus staff have contacted me to let me know that my local BT exchange will be upgraded to 'Fibre to the cabinet' in the next 3 months and then they will be able to offer Fibre broadband. My main problem is upload speeds as we use an IP phone system that uses the Internet, and with Fibre broadband, I could get much faster upload speeds of up to 10Mbps rather than the current up to 1Mb which I get with 24Mb broadband."
Phil Brown - Office Manager - DJ Supplies

"Internexus staff recommended a Tpad Business Telephone System when we were discussing our Internet Requirements for the Practice. We actually qualified for a free 12 user telephone system when we switched our broadband to Internexus. The new system has all the latest features and has made a real difference to our Practice as well us saving us money."
Dr. Michael Smith - GP

"I switched to Internexus 4 years ago and have been fairly happy with the service although recently it has been slower than I would have wished, particularly when sending large files to one of our suppliers. Internexus have been working on the most cost-effective way of upgrading my service and I have considered SDSL service with 2Mb upload. However I plan to wait for Internexus Fibre Broadband which should be available in my exchange in a few months. This will provide a faster connection than SDSL at lower costs and will also deliver faster download speeds, even though it is the upload speed which is our main problem."
Hitesh Shah - Partner - Shah Investments

"We are very pleased with the service and support we have had from Internexus Business. They were recommended to us by another Charity when we were exploring a Leased Line between our two offices. Internexus provided the lowest cost quotation and also the best advice as they also considered the costs and benefits of all of the other options before finally recommending a suitable Leased Line. This was installed within 2 months and we are pleased with the service."
Arif Anwar - Trustee - GT Foundation Charity

"We are a company making a lot of outbound calls and needed an IP based telephone system. The best value was from Tpad who quoted a 20 user phone system including dialler; and they recommended we switch to sister company Internexus for our broadband services. We have 15 sales staff making calls most of the day and evening and we wanted Internet service that would provide high speeds especially for voice traffic in the evenings. Internexus looked at all the options and worked out that Ethernet First Mile was available from our exchange and would be most cost-effective for our needs, delivering 10Mbps upload speed. Everything is now in place and working great."
J. Greenwood - Managing Director, Mobiles Direct

"I contacted Internexus after one of our staff suggested that they provide good broadband services at low prices. I wanted to look at faster broadband options for the school. I was impressed that they came back with EFM as an option which is lower cost than a Leased line which we were considering. We will be upgrading in a few months, during the holidays and I am confident that the after sales support will be as good as the pre-sales support and advice."
Julia Smith - Deputy Head Teacher- St. John's School

"We have been using Internexus for our broadband services for over 6 years. Initially we were using standard ADSL broadband and we were happy with the service and support from Internexus. Two years ago we changed to a Tpad IP based telephone system and needed to review our broadband requirements due to the high number of concurrent phone users. At the time it was recommended that what we needed was high upload speeds of over 1Mbps. Tpad recommended SDSL 2Mb and we have been very happy with the service both for our telephony and Internet requirements. "
Tony Hicks - Manager - ICT Solutions

"I have been using Internexus broadband at home for almost 10 years and was very happy with the service and support from Internexus. When we were considering upgrading the broadband needs of the business one of the Internexus staff asked us to contact Internexus Business. We had difficulty sending large property files and information to Dubai, particularly in the evening. They took their time to look at exact requirements and then recommended SDSL as the standard ADSL at our business site was yielding very low upload speeds."
Duncan Longworth - Openshore Property

"I started my business 2 years ago and wanted a business line and business broadband. I contacted the business division of Internexus and received very good service. They explained the different type of products and recommended the best solution for my start-up business which was also the lowest cost. I need to add an extra line and I will look to Internexus to provide this"
